Educational Development

Community Service Project:  The Educational Development and Awareness Committee delivered hygiene items to Goldsboro High School and Dillard Middle School. We also shared items with Wayne Academy and Dillard Charter School. It is always our pleasure to serve the community.

May Week Celebration

Educational Development is an essential area of focus. The Goldsboro Alumnae Chapter  is responsible for organizing programs, activities, and projects that aim to promote excellence in education. Being an organization of college-educated women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. actively participates in initiatives that inspire and motivate youth and young adults towards achieving their aspirations. Goldsboro Alumnae’s strong emphasis on educational development is evident through their various programs such as Delta G.E.M.S., EMBODI, and Delta Academy.

Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated’s May Week Celebration with the GEMS was a time for us to gather outside of the Delta Room. This was the first time in four years since the GEMS had been able to attend this event. Covid 19 put a damper on some things, and we are glad to be able to meet again, face to face!

End of Year Senior Recognition and Paint Party

Soror Sharon Patterson led the GEMS through their paint party experience. Our Senior Niah Raynor left the girls with some much-appreciated advice: “Enjoy your time with your friends!”

Delta GEMS was created to catch the dreams of African-American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a CAN DO attitude. The goals for Delta GEMS are:

  1. To instill the need to excel academically;
  2. To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;
  3. To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures in high school and beyond; and
  4. To create compassionate, caring, and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.

Our Signature Programs and Initiatives Include:

  • College Application and Essay Writing Clinic
  • Community Service Projects
  • End of Year Senior &  Recognition Celebration

We are gearing up for our 2023-2024 GEMS Orientation that will take place in the Delta Room on October 21, 2023 at 1:00 pm. We have many exciting ideas for this year that include a HBCU College tour and completing a service/community project.

The Delta GEMS program offers a road map for college and career planning through activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth. Delta GEMS, like Delta Academy, is implemented by chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Delta GEMS participants have the opportunity to define and “Discover their individual Brilliance.”

DR. BETTY SGABAZZ ACADEMY

The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy was created out of an urgent sense that bold action is needed to save our young females from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures. Delta Academy is an opportunity to enrich the education of girls ages 11-14. Specifically, we will augment their scholarship in math, science, and technology, provide them with opportunities to develop leadership skills through service learning, and center the cultivation and maintenance of relationships through sisterhood. During Academy sessions, activities are centered on math, science, technology, self-esteem, etiquette, and African American history. In addition to building character, self-esteem, and giving back to the community through service learning, field trips are planned to museums and other sites designed to enhance the knowledge of the participants in the identified focus areas. These young ladies experience endless possibilities. The symbol for the Delta Academy is the Dream Catcher, which in Native American culture is believed to possess the power to capture bad dreams, entangling them in a web; thus, allowing only the good dreams to pass through the center of the dream hoop into the person’s being.

DELTA GEMS

A natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Delta GEMS was created to catch the dreams of African-American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a CAN DO attitude. The goals for Delta GEMS are:
